The mindset needs to change!

[Zainab’s parents had gone to Saudi Arabia for performing Umrah and Zainab was living with her aunt. On 4 January 2018, while going to a Quran tuition class which was very close to her house, she went missing. Her uncle, Muhammad Adnan, lodged a complaint with the Kasur District Police Office. CCTV video footage which was discovered by Ansari's family members, with no help from the authorities involved, shows her accompanied by an unknown bearded man in white clothes and a jacket, holding her by the hand and walking on Peerowala Road in Kasur. Her body was later found in a garbage heap in Shahbaz Khan Road on 9th January 2018. After an autopsy, it was confirmed that she had been raped and strangled to death. The autopsy suggested that she endured captivity and torture before her murder.} (as per wikipedia)

Kidnapped…Raped…Murdered!

These words do not just sum up the story of Zainab Ansari, a young little angel but the story of many more girls who have been such victims in many different places!

For the past week, the hashtag justice for Zainab has been trending on social media and her story has been appalling to the public.
Protests rised in Kasur for the government to take action about this matter. But my topic for this blog is, why do the media has to fight for Zainab’s justice? The matter is crystal clear, that man committed a horrendous crime and needs to be punished as severely as anyone could be. The government need not be told to do so because this is what should be done.

This isn’t just about Zainab, this is about the hundreds and thousands of girls that went through such struggles. What I don’t understand is; why do victims need to walk in shame and rapists walk away freely? Why does such a society even exist? This is the time to bring about the change in the mindset of each and every one who dare to blame victims and not the rapists, because this is absolutely and utterly sick. Sometimes when I hear what the elders have to say about rape, I am left speechless. I personally know someone who has been told that issues such as rape and sex need not be addressed in front of their dad or brothers or uncles. Why? What is the logic?

We live in a society where we call ourselves feminist because it sounds cool and modern. Heck no, all those who connected a victim of rape to what she has worn, need to be ashamed. We say that women are now independent and are allowed to do whatever they want and that includes being dressed however she wants. But why do her clothes have to be a reason of her rape? Instead of slut shaming girls, why don’t we teach boys to control their freaking urges? If a girl is being accused of dressing indecently then a rapist should be accused of being a vile human being and of not minding his goddamn business.

Also, this is not also just about raped. This is actually about the stereotype that our society portray boys as being studs and macho men and their reputation is about how often they can get into a girl’s pants. This is about that sick issue. If covering oneself from head to toe means being protected, then why are hijabi girls teased and molested? They are covered right? They should be fine yet they get the distasteful stares and horrid comments of boys!

We shouldn’t be fighting for justice for zainab because she was a little child, we should be fighting for a change in humankind so that our girls can walk safely in their own hometown!
